Do I Need to Register for VAT? UK Small Business Guide
VAT registration depends on taxable turnover and your circumstances. It is a separate decision from becoming self-employed or forming a limited company.
Two threshold checks
At the date checked, the UK registration threshold is £90,000. Check both taxable turnover over the previous rolling twelve months and whether you expect to exceed the threshold in the next thirty days alone. Taxable turnover is not your profit. Some cross-border businesses have different registration rules.
Do not wait for your year-end
A rolling twelve-month check moves forward each month. Keep a sales total that makes it easy to see when older sales drop out and new sales enter. For a historical threshold breach, HMRC’s notification deadline and effective registration date follow specific rules. The forward-looking test uses a different timing rule. Follow the official instructions for your case.
What about voluntary registration?
You may choose to register below the threshold. Before deciding, model the effect on customers, recoverable input VAT, pricing, cash and administration. A business selling mainly to consumers faces a different commercial question from one selling to VAT-registered companies.
A useful decision sheet
- Separate taxable, exempt and out-of-scope sales with professional help where needed.
- Calculate the rolling total and review any large forthcoming contract.
- Record the date a registration requirement arises.
- Check the official registration deadline and process.
- Update invoicing, records and cash planning once registration is confirmed.
Do not add VAT to invoices simply because you expect to register. Check the effective date and invoicing rules.
Continue with the invoice template and a cash-flow example. Get an accountant’s advice for mixed supplies, overseas trade or a late registration.
