How to fill in your cash-flow forecast

Enter starting cash, expected customer receipts and operating payments. Use the month you expect money to move, rather than the date you send an invoice. Add one-off spending, a suitable planning reserve and a minimum cash buffer. Replace the sample assumptions with your own figures.

A simple worked example

With £5,000 opening cash, £4,000 received and £3,200 paid out, closing cash is £5,800. If you also buy £1,500 of equipment that month, closing cash falls to £4,300. Use that as the next month’s starting balance.

The builder uses monthly income and cost growth assumptions. For a business with irregular receipts, check individual payment dates in a separate schedule as well. A planning percentage is not a calculation of the tax your business owes.
